About the UHI STEM Outreach Programme

content

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a well-established area and focus for education. UHI recognises its importance and strives to embed this interdisciplinary approach in our curriculum to inspire innovation through creativity via the arts, (where STEM becomes STEAM). Our UHI strategy identifies that our science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics approach to a multi-disciplinary curriculum, produces the most professional and flexible graduates.

The UHI STEM Outreach Programme has evolved over several years to address skills gaps in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Over the last six years, the UHI STEM Team developed a successful STEM outreach model offering a range of STEM engagement activities designed to support early years and primary school learners in the Highlands. The generous support of our industry partners has now enabled us to extend the delivery of STEM materials and training to teachers across all of the UHI regions, with a three-year engagement programme (2023-26) covering the whole of the Highlands and Islands and also Argyll & Bute, Moray, Perthshire and Aberdeenshire.

Inspiration

We aim to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals by influencing pathways into STEM from early years through to further education and training.

We achieve this by:

  • Helping pupils and teachers engage with STEM subjects with confidence.
  • Supplying schools with equipment and teaching resources to support STEM learning.
  • Offering guidance to schools to help embed STEM throughout the curriculum.

Collaboration and coordination

We aim to work with STEM partners to inform and enhance our activities in providing inspirational experiences towards STEM skills and careers aligned with business needs and economic growth in the local area as well as continuing to address equity of opportunity, with rural and gender as particular areas of focus. We also work with other agencies and networks involved in STEM outreach by supporting and coordinating local plans and activities.
