25.001 Baseline Assessment and Interactive Mapping of Shetland Mussel Spat Recruitment

Led by UHI Shetland. For more information contact Tanya Riley at tanya.riley@uhi.ac.uk

This project aims to better understand spat recruitment patterns across Shetland. Working closely with farmers, it will:

  • Summarise what’s already known about mussel spat settlement—where and when it happens.
  • Identify gaps in knowledge and explore trends and influencing factors.
  • Develop a consistent system for monitoring future spatfall.
  • Create a digital map showing spat settlement data
  •

25.002 Shetland’s Data Landscape – Mapping and Mobilising for Shell-volution

Led by Aquatera. For more information contact Rebecca Shanks at rebecca.shanks@aquatera.co.uk

Shetland’s mussel industry holds a wealth of experience and knowledge that is held within the collective memory.  Farmers continually inform and improve their practice by updating their experience and understanding.    However, we believe there is data and information from a range of sources that could offer valuable insights and by unlocking and organising this information, we aim to help farmers make more informed decisions and enhance mussel farming practices.

This project will:

  • Identify existing data that could influence mussel farming, including spat collection and growth.
  • Explore how this data can be accessed and used to support future improvements in production.
