Overview of the Industry Insights Programme
What is the UHI Industry Insights Programme?
UHI's Industry Insights Programme (formerly the employer mentoring programme) is designed to encourage and support third and fourth year degree students as they transition from education to the professional world. The programme connects students from any discipline with an experienced industry professional to help them navigate and plan for the early stages of their careers.
The programme, which is run by the UHI Futures team, will have 20 available places and students will have to apply through a competitive process including shortlisting and an informal interview. It runs over 4 months (January to April 2027) with mentoring taking place via e-mail, phone, or video call - whatever suits the student and their mentor. This is an easily accessible, beneficial learning, development, and networking opportunity where students will be able to liaise with their mentor on a number of topics and discuss a range of opportunities, helping to boost their CV, build confidence and develop relationships now, and into the future.
Who will mentor me?
During the application process students will be asked to share their areas and topics of interest, and the type of sector or specialism they would like their mentor to be experienced in. All the mentors are passionate about providing the opportunity to discuss career aspirations, employability prospects and opportunities, share their own career journey so far, and explore developments or trends in the selected area of interest.
Mentor and mentee discussions should be held at least once a month for the duration of the programme. It is expected that communication will be more frequent than this however, and ongoing discussion is encouraged to ensure students get the most out of the experience.

When and how do I apply?
Applications for the programme will open the week beginning 5 October and close on 30 October 2026 and any third or fourth year students can apply, regardless of degree discipline, subject matter or location.
Because the process is competitive, with only 20 places available, students will be expected to complete an online application form and attend an informal interview which the UHI Futures team and will take place week beginning 9 November. They will then be matched with a mentor depending on individual interests and subject areas, and depending on the availability of mentors.
Students interested in applying for the programme are strongly encouraged to attend a short online information session on 12 October between 13:00 - 13:30. This is an opportunity to find out more about the programme and understand expectations. A successful mentee from last years programme will also be in attendance to share her valuable feedback and insights. Students should register their interest by clicking the box below.
What happens after I apply?
Successful students will be expected to sign a simple Mentee Confidentiality Doc and will be provided with their mentor’s contact details so that an initial meeting can be to set up to provide the opportunity to set boundaries, agree objectives and to share expectations and ambitions. Students will then embark on an exciting programme of relationship and knowledge building with their mentor.
